Until recently, the goal was simple: get your website onto the first page of Google. Today, more and more of your customers get the answer they are looking for before they click on any result at all – from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or directly from Google’s AI-generated summaries. The question is no longer only “where do I rank?” but also “does AI mention me when someone asks about what I offer?”.
That is exactly what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about. In this article we explain what it is, how it differs from the search engine optimization (SEO) you already know, and which steps you can take starting today.
At a glance
- GEO aims to get your business mentioned inside the answers AI tools give.
- It does not replace SEO: it builds on it.
- Clear answers, clean structure and credibility are its three core ingredients.
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization is the set of actions that help AI tools find, understand and cite your business’s content when they put together an answer. Instead of a list of ten links, the user receives a ready-made text with a handful of sources. The goal of GEO is for you to be one of them.
You will also come across the terms AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or “SEO for AI”. In practice they describe the same need: content that a machine can read, summarise and attribute correctly.
Why it already matters for businesses in Greece
This is not something that “will arrive one day”. Google’s AI Overviews already appear in Greek, and since October 2025 AI Mode has also been available in Greece, answering complex questions through a conversation. According to Google, the questions people ask there are nearly three times longer than a classic search.
This changes two things. First, the way we ask: instead of “accountant Marousi”, the user types “which accountant in Marousi works with small companies that run an online store?”. Second, the way we click: a Pew Research Center study found that when an AI summary appears in the results, users click on links less often.
Put simply, you can hold your rankings and still see fewer visits. Being present inside the answer itself is becoming just as important as ranking.
SEO and GEO: what changes and what stays the same
GEO does not replace SEO; it builds on top of it. A website that loads slowly, lacks a clean structure or does not show up in search at all is unlikely to be chosen as a source by an AI. What changes is the emphasis:
| Classic SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A high position in the results | A mention inside the answer |
| How the user asks | Short keywords | Full questions, in natural language |
| What matters most | Keywords, links, technical soundness | Clear answers, structure, credibility of the source |
| How it is measured | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic | Brand mentions, visits from AI tools |
6 practical steps to make AI “see” you
1. Answer the questions your customers actually ask
Collect the questions you hear on the phone, by email and in meetings, and answer each one clearly on your pages. Start with the answer in one or two sentences and then go into the details. AI tools favour text from which they can extract a clear, self-contained answer.
2. Give your content a clean structure
Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists, comparison tables and FAQ sections help both the reader and the machine. A well-organised content marketing plan is the foundation for everything else.
3. Add structured data (schema)
Structured data are “labels” in a page’s code that state explicitly what each element is: business, service, product, price, review, frequently asked question. Visitors do not see them, but they make content far easier to interpret. Implementing them properly is part of careful web design.
4. Build credibility that shows
Sign your articles with real authors, present your team, your projects and your certifications, and cite the sources of the data you use. AI systems rely on sources that demonstrate experience and expertise – the same principles we describe in our ultimate guide to SEO.
5. Make sure others mention you too
An AI forms its picture of your business not only from your own website but also from what is written about you elsewhere: reviews, business directories, articles, industry media. Consistent contact details everywhere and active online reputation management increase your chances of being recommended.
6. Don’t shut the door on AI tools
Check that your website does not block the crawlers of AI tools (through the robots.txt file or security settings), that it loads fast, and that your core content is available as text and not only inside images or videos.
How to measure whether GEO is working
Measurement here is less mature than in classic SEO, and it is worth knowing that from the start. There are, however, three practical indicators:
- Visits from AI tools. In Google Analytics you can see how many visitors arrive from sources such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini.
- Test questions. Write down 15–20 questions one of your customers would ask and check every month whether and how your business is mentioned in the answers.
- Searches for your brand name. When an AI recommends you, many users then search for you by name. Growth in these searches is a good sign.

Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO depends on good SEO, and most actions benefit both.
How quickly do results show?
It depends on your industry, your competition and where your website is starting from. As with SEO, this is an investment of months rather than days, and nobody can guarantee that an AI will mention a specific business.
Does it matter for a small local business?
Yes. Questions put to AI tools are often very specific (“near me”, “for my situation”), and that is where a small business with clear, specialised content can stand out.
Do I need to rebuild my website?
Usually not. In most cases targeted improvements to structure, content and structured data are enough.
Conclusion
Search is not disappearing – it is changing shape. The businesses that make sure now that they give clear answers, have a technically sound website and build credibility will be the ones mentioned when their customers ask an AI. The earlier you start, the bigger your head start.
